The Plains Peanut Festival

On September 23rd, 2017, thousands of peanut lovers, revelers, families, and farmers will descend on President Jimmy Carter’s historic hometown of Plains, Georgia for the 21st Annual Plains Peanut Festival. With an oldfashioned parade, local vendors, a road race and fun run–and of course, plenty of peanutsthis tiny town of 800 delivers a big, beautiful dose of Americana.

The Festival marks the end of a harvest season built on sweat, hard work, and anticipation. Thousands of tiny seeds have grown into tons of peanuts ready to become pies, butters, ballpark snacks and candies–and we believe that’s worth celebrating. We honor the noble art of farming and couldn’t be more proud of this year’s crop and all who worked to make it happen.

Why Plains?

Not every city raised a United States President and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Plains, Georgia is the birthplace and stomping grounds of Former President Jimmy Carter. Born to a peanutfarming family, Carter first served as a U.S. Naval officer and then went on to become a Georgia State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and of course, the President of the United States. He brought solar power to both the White House and his hometown, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and remains an iconic figure in the peanut industry. And at 92 years old, he’s not slowing down–our hometown hero still fights for human rights around the world, teaches Sunday School at his church and continues to support the annual Plains Peanut Festival. His commitment to community is as strong as ever!

Plains is a small town that defines Southern hospitality. We’re proud of our citizens and their contributions to the world. And while you’re at the Festival, we know you’ll go nuts for us, too. Say “Hi” to a former leader of the free world, chow down on delicious peanut-filled snacks, and share our stickers with friends and family so everyone can take part in celebrating our peanuts, our town, and the people that make us proud.

Peanuts are my Jam –
here’s why they should be yours too:

From the lunchbox to the ballpark, peanuts are an American tradition. But not everyone knows how important their favorite snack actually is. Peanuts are power-packed to change lives for the better.

There’s a reason why peanut butter and jelly is a classic – it’s delicious! But there’s more to peanuts than their one-of-a-kind taste–these little nuts are packed with healthy benefits.

In peanut products, we find a perfect marriage between good taste and nutrition. High in protein, healthy fats, vitamin E, and niacin, peanuts can be a great substitute for sugary snacks. Peanuts are also an excellent source of resveratrol, an antioxidant believed to help prevent cancers, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and various infections.

And peanuts aren’t just good for our bodies–they’re also good for our Earth. Peanuts naturally replenish nitrogen in the soil, so farmers can use less fertilizer. Plus, because peanuts grow underground, they need very little water. Many peanut farmers rely solely on rainfall to water their crops, letting Mother Nature do what she does best.

Did You Know?

  • The U.S. is the third largest producer of peanuts in the world with approximately 7,500 peanut farmers producing about 3 million tons per year.
  • March is National Peanut Month!
  • Georgia is the #1 peanut producing state?
  • Jimmy Carter was not the first peanut farmer to be elected president. Thomas Jefferson was!
  • Peanuts account for two-thirds of all snack nuts consumed in the U.S.

So whether you love them in your favorite candy, at a ballgame, or in a classic PB&J, peanuts bring nutrition and financial stability to the families around the world – in a sustainable way. And that’s something we can all jam to.
